#GRDates: My Spring Date Picks for $25 or Less

#GRDates is a weekly series highlighting fun & frugal dates in Grand Rapids and around West Michigan for $25 or less! Because I love West Michigan and want to experience everything it has to offer, but I do have to stick to a budget.

Last week I gave you an assignment: Make a list of frugal, free, and fun date ideas you’d like to do this spring in West Michigan – even if it’s just 2 or 3 things. Then, actually do one of them this weekend. The only rule is they have to be $25 or less.

Did you do it?  As promised, this week I’m sharing my top 10 list of Spring dates I’d like to do:

Take dance/salsa lessons at Salsalogy. We have a LivingSocial deal to use ($19 for 3 sessions)!  We’ll see if these hips can move the way they did pre-30.

Sushi in the park. Go to D&W Fresh Market and pick up some sushi (it’s good. really.) and take it to any park for a picnic. Why not?

Have a Beer Tasting Party with friends. Everyone brings a different six-er of Michigan craft beer.  Complete the experience with pizzas on the grill and have everyone bring their favorite topping.

Butterflies are Blooming at Fred Meijer Gardens. Only $12 per adult through April 30, 2011. So many people have recommended it. I’ve never been. Have you?

Take me out to the ball game. Whitecaps lawn tickets are only $6 each. Go on Thrifty Thursday for $1 hot dogs and $2 beer.

Hike some sand dunes. Rosy Mound in Ottawa County is a great place to get out for a day of sun and fresh air. Take some water, snacks, and only pay $4-$6 for parking.

Go to John Ball Zoo. I haven’t been to the zoo in years. They have a ton of spring events (Twilight Sensory Safari sounds interesting) and general admission is only $5 per person.

Hit a bucket of balls at the driving range. Not a golfer? Doesn’t really matter. Have a shortest drive contest and share some laughs.

Founders and live music. I really want to see The Crane Wives after watching them on Fox 17′s “The One Seven.”

Your turn! What would should I add to this list?

Meijer: $10 Off $75+ Purchase (Exp 4/7)

Meijer SupercenterGet $10 off a $75+ purchase at Meijer.com using code BACKYARD (exp 4/7/11).

It does exclude electronics, video games, groceries, and a few other items, but lots of spring items are on sale including sandals, rain boots, backyard pools, boats, canoes, kayaks, and more.  This caught my attention because my dad was staying with me this week and was envious of my Bunn coffeemaker. Perfect deal for that!

Frugal How-to: Homemade Laundry Detergent

Good, prettily scented laundry detergent is expensive.  Since I’ve always been fairly fussy about which brands I will use, finding it on sale with a coupon takes perfect timing and scouring the ads. Here’s the solution to inexpensive laundry detergent that is easy to make, and even the most brand-loyal folks will love it.  All the ingredients can be easily found at Meijer.  Scroll to the bottom for the dollars and cents.

Ingredients:
Fels-Naptha bar soap ($1.39)
Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda ($2.79)
Borax Laundry Booster ($3.12)
10 drops scented oil (optional)
Grater ($5.19)
6+ cup container (on hand)

homemade laundry detergent ingredients1.  Grate the entire Fels-Naptha bar soap into your container. I purchased a higher-quality grater that grates in both directions and it took me about 20 minutes to grate the bar completely. Sit in a chair and position the container between your legs to make it easier.

homemade laundry detergent recipe2.  Add 2 cups of the Arm & Hammer powder and 2 cups of the Borax. Add the scented oil at this time if you’re using it.  Stir to mix, or put the lid on and shake carefully to combine the ingredients.

how to make laundry detergent3.  Use 1 tablespoon for regular loads; 2 tablespoons for heavily-soiled or extra large loads.  It will not get bubbly or sudsy. This is normal.  I tried it on a load of towels first and LOVE it.

One batch of this recipe makes 6 cups of laundry detergent for only $2.86. It’s 96 loads at 1 tablespoon each, so this laundry detergent costs you only 3¢ per load!

4.  Optional:  For natural fabric softener, put white vinegar into a Downy Ball (approx $1.79). The vinegar evaporates away so there is no smell.

Thanks so much to reader Julie S. for sharing her recipe with me. She was so pleased with the results and this detergent didn’t aggravate her daughter’s eczema.  Let us know how you like this version of frugal laundry detergent!

End of Month: Deals/Coupons Still Available

I took my cousin to lunch for her birthday at Red’s on the River today. We used a Groupon that was close to expiration (she’s the one that gave me the $1 razor that started this whole coupon biz… so she didn’t mind if I redeemed it with her… plus we each had our own dessert… and no one complains when they’re stuffing their faces with chocolate mousse and chocolate lava cake, right?).

But, I haven’t been feeling so hot the last couple of days (boo hoo) and would like to take the rest of the day off if it’s ok with you?

I’ll leave you with a round-up of deals still available through the end of the month:

  • Kellogg’s coupons – Register for $5 of printable coupons. (I was able to print over $10 worth). PRINT LIMIT REACHED.
  • Quiznos coupon – Printable coupon for “any Small Sub for Only $2.99 & a Free Cookie”.
  • Robitussin coupon – Be Prepared when the Flu comes and save on relief! Sign up today and get a coupon for $1.00 off!

See you back here tomorrow!
