Silly me to think the $25/wk Food Budget Challenge would be no harder than my 2010 budget of $40/wk. It takes a LOT more effort. Here’s what I’ve learned so far. Can you relate to any of this?
1. I started out making meal plans. 7 breakfasts, snacks, lunches, dinner. What I learned? I don’t eat all that food. I probably should. It’s probably close to the calories I should be consuming, but I don’t. Talk to me in a month when I’m training. Anyone else have a hard time getting enough calories?
PS I didn’t post the week 4 meal plan. Should I? Do you really care exactly what kind of meals I’m making?
2. If I don’t prepare the food ahead of time, I don’t cook it. Meaning? If I don’t cut up the veggies, make the salad into daily-portioned containers for lunch to grab on my way out the door in the morning, or prepare soup in bulk for consumption throughout the week, it doesn’t happen. I’m either too hungry or too tired when I get home. Now I understand why you all get so excited about your freezers.
3. I never knew impulse-buying applied to food shopping. It does. When you only have $25 per week to spend, you are ever-so-careful about what you put in your cart. You have to stick to the list. I got sucked in by a 95¢ bag of croutons tonight, justifying that it would tempt me to finish up the lettuce from 2 weeks ago before it goes bad. But those beautiful bell peppers? You can’t just throw them in your cart because they’re too expensive. I have to stick to the shopping plan.
4. I want to stockpile as much as possible now so I can spend my entire $25 per week at the first sign of Farmer’s Market season. When you’ve just been dug out of Snowmaggedon 2011, all you can dream about is summer and sweet-smelling, local produce.
5.
I found another cool deal site with chic and unique deals. It’s called Jasmere. Same deal you’re familiar with: if you refer a friend that makes a purchase, you get a $10 referral credit.
With Valentine’s Day coming up, I like today’s collapsible vase deal. I live in an apartment with very limited storage space, so the idea of donating my glass vases to charity and having a vase I can store in a drawer is rather appealing.
If you love Jasmere and daily deal sites, don’t forget about Gaggle of Chicks, Eversave, and Zulily.
